MEET THE ARTIST
ADAM LESTER
For Island Odyssey, we worked closely with Adam Lester to interpret the Australian artist’s unique visual language on a host of new designs. Inspired by the way that travel invokes nostalgia, and how various modes of transport connect us as individuals, the explorations through colour and texture are motivated by the mementos, memories and musings we carry home with us.
Adam opened his studio doors, and brought us into his world...
I was an only child until I was 10, so I guess that making things, drawing, painting, creating my own world, was my way of passing the time. If I wasn’t building Lego or playing cars, I’d be painting and drawing for hours.
I think that any creative, across any medium, would agree that once the desire to make something is lit, that fire is impossible to put out. Mainly because you can never be too good! There’s always room for improvement, the next experiment, the next subject. Brett Whiteley describes being an artist as having an affliction, something to be dealt with for one’s entire life. Just get on with it!
"If I wasn’t an artist, I’d probably be a
de-registered Neurosurgeon or a part-time Rocket Scientist!"
Music is arguably a more creative force to me than anything. Done well, it is still the ‘big daddy’ of all the art forms in my opinion. So yes, I listen to music constantly when I’m in the studio and it’s a very important part of my art practice.
If I was to choose one song, it would be ‘Sometimes I Forget You’ve Gone’ by the Dirty Three.
I’m terribly sentimental and nostalgic about certain things and places that I’ve experienced in life. I’m actually drawn to the way things decay and show their wear and tear. It’s also fun trying to find beauty and meaning in places and things that are not archetypally beautiful. The patina of life is infinitely fascinating to me - in objects and humans alike.
